Sherpa cracks $1 million at Aussie box office

Jennifer Peedom.

Jennifer Peedom's documentary Sherpa has now earned an impressive $1,016,112 at the Australian box office and continues to play on more than 30 screens.

It becomes only the fourth Australian feature documentary (excluding IMAX) to ever pass the $1 million box office threshold.

Director Jennifer Peedom said: "For a country with no mountains, we didn't know if Australian audiences would be attracted to a film set on Everest, but it seems that the bigger and more political themes of the film have really struck a chord."

"It's a testament to the whole team who worked so hard to make this film. I am thrilled and I know the Sherpa community will be too."

Producer Bridget Ikin said: “I’d like to thank all the audiences who’ve come to see Sherpa in the cinemas and shared their enthusiasm for it – and Screen Australia, for their tremendous on-going support for the film."

Sherpa was recently announced as the winner of Perth International Arts Festival's Audience Award.

The film has also garnered wins at the AACTA Awards and the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards.

Internationally, Sherpa was the Winner of the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Feature at the BFI London Film Festival, and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Documentary.

It is distributed in Australia by Transmission Films and Footprint Films.

Screen Australia chief executive Graeme Mason said it was a thrill to see an Australian documentary resonating so strongly with audiences both here and abroad.

"Not only is it terrific that Australians are flocking to see Sherpa in local cinemas, but it’s also really exciting that audiences in 220 countries have also had the chance to see it in the past few weeks," he said.

"This is an exceptional result and we offer our congratulations to director Jennifer Peedom , producer Bridget Ikin and all involved in the project.”

Screen Australia initially supported the film through the Documentary Development program.

The film then received funding through the agency’s Feature Film Production Fund, as well as support to attend international festivals and awards.

  1. I think this was informative about the dangers of extreme adventure and very educational about the Sherpa people Congratulations Janet COPLAND
