Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the fastest film ever to reach more than $1 million in ticket sales at IMAX, Darling Habour, Sydney.

In the four weeks since release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has sold more than 54,000 tickets at the cinema and sold-out 54 screenings.

In the lead up to the film’s release, advance ticket sales were strong with more than $520,000 sold, the highest amount ever in ticket pre-sales on a film at IMAX Darling Harbour.

During the first week of release, demand for the film was so strong that IMAX Darling Harbour ran screenings for 27 hours non-stop.

This achieved not only the highest grossing opening day, but also the highest grossing opening week ever at the cinema, eclipsing the previous results for the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012.

The cinema holds Australia’s only 2D 1570 IMAX film print (1 of 20 in the world) of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Director J.J. Abrams used IMAX cameras to shoot selected scenes, which expand to fill the full height of the IMAX screen.
