Suzi Taylor doco on Australia’s largest same sex formal to premiere

Love in full colour, a documentary from Melbourne filmmaker Suzi Taylor about Australia's largest same sex formal, will premiere in Melbourne on December 3.

Made over four years, it follows the experiences of 12 LGBT teens growing up, falling in love and coming of age.

It deals with overcoming rejection, discrimination and invisibility but also about the transformative effects of connecting to a community that fosters a sense of belonging.

Taylor said it was an absolute privilege to be let into the worlds of these incredible young people.

“This film is about celebrating them as individuals, and exposing the often harsh realities many of them face at high school,” she said.

Taylor came to the film with the knowledge that LGBT people in Australia have the highest incident of suicide than any other group.

When she came across a news article about the Same Sex Formal, an annual event run by Melbourne youth organisation Minus18, she was intrigued.

Taylor said the school formal was a rite of passage that many people took for granted.

"Imagine being told you weren’t allowed to attend, or that your same sex partner wouldn’t be welcome? Even in 2015, that’s the reality for many LGBT teens. I wanted to give these amazing young people a voice to share their experiences,” said Taylor."
