The Babadook wins Berlinale Talent Highlight Pitch Award

Press release from Causeway Films

The Babadook (writer/director Jennifer Kent, producer Kristina Ceyton) was one of 11 projects selected out of 270 submissions to attend the Berlinale Talent Project Market (TPM). The projects will be presented alongside the 27 regular Official Projects of the Berlinale Co-Production Market 2011, which brings together around 500 producers, sales agents and financiers from all over the world for exclusive and concentrated networking.

The Babadook is also one of only three projects to receive the Talent Highlight Pitch Award. The winners were selected by the TPM international jury and will pitch their projects to this year’s Co-Production Market audience. Each award comes with a 3.000€ cash prize for the further development of the project.

The Babadook is a psychological horror about a single mother who becomes possessed by a monster that wills her to kill her 6-year-old son. Using her award winning short horror film Monster as a springboard, writer/director Jennifer Kent developed the script at the prestigious Binger Lab in Amsterdam with assistance from Screen NSW and Screen Australia. ‘The Babadook’ is the first Australian project to be selected for the Berlinale Talent Project Market since its inception in 2004.
