The WA Screen Academy and WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) are still celebrating after winning six WA Screen Awards out of 15 nominations. Our Graduates have proven their outstanding talent and are honoured by receiving these awards. This is yet another testament of superb filmmakers emerging from the WA Screen Academy.

The WA Screen Awards ceremony is the premier event – the Oscars for filmmakers in WA, and was held at the Perth Concert Hall on Saturday, 6 March.

Stuffed, written by WA Screen Academy graduate Magda Wozniak, received the award for Best Screenplay while Best Cinematography was awarded to fellow Screen Academy graduate Kat Goddard for Hidden Clouds.

WAAPA Music Composition student Andrew Clarke won the award for Best Original Score for Runner while WAAPA acting graduate, Melanie Munt, was awarded Best Actress for her work in Trinkets, a film written and directed by Robbie Studsor, an ECU scriptwriting lecturer.

The prestigious ‘Young Filmmaker of the Year’ award went to WA Screen Academy graduate Mike Hoath, whose most recent film ‘Bucks Party’ has already started to gain recognition on the festival circuit.

Rounding off a very successful evening, The Outstanding Contribution to the Industry Award went to John Rapsey, Director of the WA Screen Academy and Head of Scriptwriting at ECU.

“I was thrilled to see the number of prestigious awards going to ECU students and graduates this year,” said John.

“It is great evidence that the unique collaboration between the WA Screen Academy and WAAPA is creating teams of excellent filmmakers,” he said.

The WA Screen Academy at ECU offers intensive programs in screen studies providing students with hands-on experience in producing, writing, directing and editing short films, documentaries, magazine shows and cross-platform drama programs.
